Wait, the Future OpenAI thing isn't for training on Future content, but for embeddings and references? Like, essentially the way ChatGPT 4o already uses it, but now the Future people get paid? That sounds... good? Maybe I'm reading this wrong.

Hard to say if it'll be good for Future. Presumably Open AI is paying them well for this deal. But if people don't click through and Future is still reliant on display ads on their sites, then it isn't sustainable.

It's also a problem if Open AI pulls funding the way that other tech giants have when they've gone from paying media outlets to contribute to their platform to ending those deals. A lot of outlets that chased easy money making Facebook Live videos were hurt badly when Facebok pivoted away from it.

We'll see, but the sinking feeling I have is that it's still best for media outlets to try to focus on business models where readers pay for the work. Like many Game File readers do (thank you!).

Yeah, OpenAI is estimated to be $14 billion in the red by 2026, according to an early October report from The Information.

Even if it keeps growing rapidly, expecting it to bankroll publications in the long term is probably naïve. I *do* wonder how significant of a traffic driver it could be, especially if this trend of people using it as a search alternative continues.

Regardless of the implications for the media industry, I guess Google having any modicum of competition isn't a bad thing overall.
