Wow, even the actual Metroid games are having trouble with the sell? Super interesting. It seems like something across all arts/entertainment in recent times where there’s just so much stuff out there.
Metroid is historically one of the lower-selling Nintendo franchises, be it the 2D games or the Prime trilogy. They'll crack a million, but it's a climb.
This year's Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown from Ubisoft had great reviews but doesn't seem to have done as well commercially. The game debuted in mid-January but ranked 13th for U.S. game sales that month, according to Circana. That's just one chart, but a notable one.
I love the genre. February's Ultros was one of the coolest games I've played in years. But it just doesn't connect with the masses the way it does with critics.
Glad to see Animal Well getting some press coverage. I'm excited to see Dunkey's first published video game!

Ah interesting, so it's a bit more niche of a genre. Admittedly, I haven't really played Metroidvania games, myself.
I’ll have to look into animal well……..once I’ve beaten Trails In The Sky: Trails of Reverie!!
